1990 Kylie Minogue: Tears On My Pillow

Another cover version, though not of the 1975 Johnny Nash hit of the same name - this 'Tears On My Pillow' is a 1958 doo wop tune originally recorded by Little Anthony & The Imperials and in a way that charms with an understated innocence. Taken from the soundtrack of Kylie's fifties based starring vehicle 'The Delinquents', Ms Minogue's take plays up those period roots by kitting it out in gaudy fifties fancy dress saxophone honks and "do do do dooo" harmonies while the lady herself goes at the lyric the way a Saturday night drunk goes at a kebab. "You don't remember ME!", "I'd gladly take you BACK!": Kylie hammers the words with the subtlety of a tourettes sufferer learning a foreign language by rote but her honk is a Bruce Lee five finger death punch that kills it stone dead. Can't lay all the blame at her feet though; by mistaking noise for emotion, 'Tears On My Pillow' sets to sea in a sieve from the off so it's no surprise it sinks under the rollers long before it loses sight of the shore. A mess, frankly.
